Gemini's pitch isn't a better chatbot — it's an assistant that's already where you work. The side panels in Gmail and Docs, Deep Research, and Gemini Live are all solid, but the compounding advantage is the bundle: AI Pro at $19.99/month includes the full Gemini 3.1 Pro model with 1M-token context, Veo 3.1 video generation, and 5 TB of storage. No rival packages that much for the price, and the $4.99 AI Plus tier undercuts even ChatGPT's $8 Go plan while including Workspace integration. Growth from 400M to 950M+ monthly users in about a year says the strategy is working.

The frustrations are distinctly Google-shaped. Features roll out unevenly across the app, Workspace, and AI Studio; plan and model names churn (AI Premium became AI Pro, Ultra split into two price points); and knowing what your tier actually includes takes homework. The third-party ecosystem also trails ChatGPT — there is no real equivalent of the custom GPT store, and for verifiable, citation-first search Perplexity is still sharper.
