Our verdict

Best for: Anyone who wants one general assistant for research, writing, coding, and images.

Skip if: You need specialized workflows like brand voice or SEO — dedicated tools go deeper.

Our review

Editorial score: 4.7 out of 5

ChatGPT remains the default answer to which AI you should use, for a reason: nothing else bundles chat, research, image generation, voice, file analysis, and an ecosystem of custom GPTs behind one $20 subscription. Deep Research in particular has matured into a genuinely useful cited-research workflow.

Its weakness is the flip side of its breadth. Brand voice, SEO tooling, fiction craft, editor integration — every specialist in this directory beats it on their home turf, and the ad-supported $8 Go tier without the flagship model feels like a tier too many. Costs also climb fast if you need Pro's headroom.

Verdict: the best first AI subscription for most people, and the baseline every specialist tool here has to justify itself against.
