About remove.bg
remove.bg strips the background from a photo in about five seconds and is the tool most people mean when they say "background remover". Free accounts get unlimited preview-resolution downloads (0.25 MP) plus 50 free API previews a month; full-resolution downloads cost credits, from $9/month for 40 credits ($8.10/month billed yearly) or $3 for a three-credit pay-as-you-go pack. Now part of Canva, it also ships an AI photo editor, background generation and bulk tools on the paid plans.

Best for
Pros
- The cutout quality on difficult edges is still the benchmark other tools get measured against
- Free tier is genuinely unlimited at preview resolution — fine for social posts and mockups
- Pay-as-you-go from $3 means occasional users never need a subscription
- The API is mature and widely integrated, so it drops into existing e-commerce pipelines
Cons
- Full-resolution downloads always cost a credit — the free tier caps you at 0.25 MP (roughly 612×408)
- Subscription credits reset monthly and do not roll over; only pay-as-you-go credits persist
- It does one job: no layers, no compositing, no design canvas — you finish the image elsewhere
- Photoroom and Canva bundle background removal into a full editor for a similar monthly price
Our verdict
Best for: Anyone who needs clean cutouts at volume — product sellers, designers, and developers wiring removal into a pipeline.
Skip if: You want the cutout plus the rest of the design work in one place; Photoroom or Canva give you an editor around it.
Our review
Editorial score: 4.3 out of 5remove.bg is the rare AI tool that has stayed the default for years by refusing to become a suite. Drop in a photo, get a clean PNG, move on. The reason it still wins on quality is unglamorous: it has been tuned relentlessly on the cases that break everything else — flyaway hair, fur, chain-link, glass, motion blur at the edges. Competitors have closed the gap on easy subjects; on hard ones remove.bg still needs less cleanup, which is exactly where the time savings live.
The pricing model is where buyers get annoyed, and the annoyance is legitimate. The free tier is unlimited but deliberately useless for real output at 0.25 MP — it is a preview, not a product. Every full-resolution export costs a credit, and subscription credits vanish at month end whether you used them or not; only pay-as-you-go credits persist. At $9/month for 40 credits, casual users are usually better off buying $3 packs. And the tool genuinely does one thing: no layers, no compositing, no canvas, so anything past the cutout happens in Photoroom, Canva or Photoshop anyway.
That single-purpose focus is also why it survived being acquired by Canva in 2021 without being absorbed — the API is the real business, sitting inside e-commerce pipelines, Shopify stores and other people's design tools. If you are a developer, that maturity is the strongest argument here: 50 free preview calls a month, credit-based production pricing, and integrations that already exist.
Verdict: still the best pure background remover, and the right call when the cutout is the job or you are automating it at volume. If you want the cutout plus the poster, the listing and the ad around it, Photoroom or Canva deliver more per dollar.
What reviewers elsewhere say
78% positive — Near-universal praise for cutout quality and speed; the complaints are all about the credit model — preview-only free downloads and monthly credits that expire unused.

What is remove.bg?
remove.bg is a single-purpose AI tool that removes the background from a photo automatically, usually in about five seconds. It runs in the browser, as desktop apps for Windows, Mac and Linux, and as a REST API used inside other products. It has been part of Canva since 2021.
Is remove.bg free?
Partly. You get unlimited free downloads at preview resolution — 0.25 MP, roughly 612×408 pixels — plus 50 free API previews a month. Full-resolution downloads cost one credit each: $3 for a three-credit pack, or subscriptions from $9/month ($8.10/month billed yearly) for 40 credits.
How much does remove.bg cost?
Lite is $9/month for up to 40 credits ($8.10/month billed yearly), Pro is $39/month for 200 credits ($35.10 yearly) and Volume+ is $89/month for 500 credits ($80.10 yearly). One-off packs start at $3 for three credits. Subscription credits reset monthly; pay-as-you-go credits do not expire.
Does remove.bg have an API?
Yes — a mature REST API with client libraries, plus plugins for Photoshop and Figma and connectors for Shopify, WooCommerce and Zapier. Free accounts get 50 preview API calls a month; production calls consume credits.
remove.bg vs Photoroom — which is better?
remove.bg wins on the cutout itself and on API maturity, so it is the better pick if removal is the job or if you are automating it. Photoroom wraps comparable removal in a full product-photo studio with backgrounds, batch templates and mobile apps, so it is better value if you need the finished image rather than just the transparent PNG.
