About Canva

Canva is the default design tool for non-designers: presentations, social posts, videos, docs, and print, all built from templates with drag-and-drop editing. Magic Studio adds AI throughout — Magic Write for text, Dream Lab for image generation, Magic Eraser and Expand for photos, and a conversational AI assistant. The free plan is genuinely capable; Pro is $18/month or $144/year (about $12/month) with a 30-day free trial, and the per-seat Business plan is $25/user/month or $250/user/year.

Pros

  • Free plan is genuinely usable — editor, templates, and a monthly AI allowance
  • Easiest learning curve of any design tool at this scale
  • AI features are integrated where you work, not bolted on as a separate app
  • Annual Pro at about $12/mo is cheap for the asset library alone

Cons

  • AI credits drain fast — the conversational assistant burns multiple credits per attempt
  • Output can look 'Canva-shaped' — templates are recognizable everywhere
  • Trustpilot score of 2.3, mostly billing and trial-cancellation complaints
  • Pro price has climbed repeatedly — from $12.99 to $15 to $18/month

Our verdict

Best for: Individuals, marketers, and small teams who produce everyday visual content and want AI built into a familiar editor.

Our review

Editorial score: 4.6 out of 5

Canva's advantage has never been any single feature — it's that 240 million people already know how to use it, and the Magic Studio AI lands inside that muscle memory. Magic Write drafts copy in your document, Dream Lab generates images into your design, and Magic Switch turns one asset into every format and language your channels need. For everyday marketing output, that integration beats stitching together a chatbot, an image generator, and an editor.

The criticisms are fair, though. AI allowances sound generous until you learn the conversational assistant can eat several credits per attempt, failed generations included. Serious designers will still hit the ceiling fast: Canva's vector and photo tools don't approach Adobe's, and the template-first workflow means your output can look like everyone else's. The 2.3 Trustpilot score — against 4.7 on both G2 and Capterra — is the familiar story of trial-billing complaints rather than product quality, but repeated price hikes ($12.99 to $15 to $18 for Pro) are a real trend.

For pure AI generation quality, dedicated tools win: Midjourney and Adobe Firefly produce better images than Dream Lab, and Gamma builds a deck from a prompt faster than Canva's presentation flow. Canva's counter is that nothing else combines passable versions of all of it in one canvas at this price.

Verdict: the safest recommendation in this category for individuals and small teams doing everyday design. Specialists — brand designers, photographers, deck-a-day founders — should pair or replace it with the dedicated tool for their lane.

How much does Canva cost?

The free plan is fully usable with limited AI. Pro is $18/month or $144/year (about $12/month) with a 30-day free trial; the per-seat Business plan is $25/user/month or $250/user/year.

Yes — the Canva Connect APIs let developers manage assets, autofill brand templates, edit and resize designs, and embed Canva into other apps.

What AI features does Canva have?

Magic Studio spans Magic Write (text), Dream Lab (image generation), Magic Eraser/Expand (photo editing), Magic Switch (resize and translate), and a conversational assistant — all metered by monthly AI allowances.

Is Canva Pro worth it over the free plan?

If you design weekly, yes: Pro adds 141M+ premium assets, Brand Kit, background removal, Magic Switch, and roughly 10x the AI allowance for about $12/month billed annually.
