On raw musicality, Udio still earns its reputation: vocals sound human more often than any rival, and the extend/remix/edit loop rewards people who treat generation as songwriting rather than slot-machine pulls. The licensing deals with UMG, Warner, Merlin, and Kobalt also make it the only major AI music tool building on authorized training data - a real long-term advantage as courts circle the category.

But right now, Udio asks users to pay for music they cannot take with them. Downloads have been off since October 2025, DRM is being layered on via BuyDRM, and the promised licensed platform had still not launched by mid-2026. The community reaction was brutal - Trustpilot sits at 1.6 - and every month of walled-garden limbo sends creators to Suno, which still lets you export. Sony's ongoing lawsuit adds more uncertainty.

Verdict: the most legally future-proof AI music service and arguably the best-sounding one, but today it is a beautiful instrument bolted to the studio floor. Hobbyists and fans should enjoy the free tier; anyone who needs their files should use Suno and re-evaluate when the licensed platform actually ships.

Does Udio have an API?
