Copilot's advantage is placement. It sits exactly where code happens — the editor and the pull request — so its completions, chat, and review comments arrive with zero context-switching. The coding agent that takes an issue and returns a PR is the most production-ready version of that workflow from any vendor.

The AI Credits system introduced in 2026 muddies an otherwise clean pitch: completions are unlimited, but premium-model usage now needs budget arithmetic, and heavy agent users burn through allotments fast. And the further you stray from GitHub's ecosystem, the less compelling it gets against editor-agnostic rivals like Cursor.

Verdict: near-mandatory for teams already on GitHub, and priced almost too reasonably at $10 for individuals. Evaluate alternatives only if your code lives elsewhere.
