Windsurf earned its following the honest way: a free tier that's actually usable every day. Unlimited Tab completions, solid inline edits, and free access to Cognition's fast SWE models make it the best no-cost AI editor available, and Cascade remains a genuinely good agent — its Fast Context engine finds the right files quickly, and multi-file edits feel coordinated rather than scattershot. The March 2026 switch from opaque credits to daily and weekly quotas also made costs easier to reason about than Cursor's credit pool.

The story around the product is the problem. In eighteen months Windsurf went through a collapsed OpenAI acquisition, a Google deal that took its founders, a Cognition acquisition, a pricing overhaul, and finally a June 2026 rebrand to Devin Desktop.
