About Recraft

Recraft is the image model designers reach for when the output has to be editable: it generates real vector SVGs — not traced bitmaps — alongside raster images, mockups and icon sets, with brand style controls that keep a set of assets consistent. The free plan gives 50 credits a day but the images are public and not licensed for commercial use; paid plans start at $10/month for 1,000 credits with full commercial rights, and there is an API. The V4 model, released February 2026, rebuilt the system around art-director-style control of composition, colour and light.

Pros

  • The only mainstream image model whose vector output is genuinely production-editable
  • Custom brand styles hold a look across dozens of assets far better than prompt-copying does
  • $10/month for 1,000 credits with full commercial rights undercuts Midjourney's entry tier
  • Designers get a canvas and layer tools, not just a prompt box and a download button

Cons

  • Free-plan images are public in the community gallery and carry no commercial licence at all
  • Credits reset monthly and do not carry over; top-ups cost $2 per 200 credits
  • Photorealistic raster output still trails Midjourney and FLUX on the hardest scenes
  • Complex vector prompts can produce technically-editable SVGs with messier paths than a human would draw

Our verdict

Best for: Designers and brand owners who need logos, icons and illustrations they can actually edit afterwards.

Skip if: You mainly want photoreal stills or cinematic art — Midjourney and FLUX are stronger and you do not need vectors.

Our review

Editorial score: 4.3 out of 5

Almost every image model produces pixels. Recraft produces geometry. That single difference is why it keeps showing up in designers' stacks while flashier models cycle through: an SVG from Recraft opens in Illustrator or Figma as editable paths, so a generated icon is the start of the work rather than a reference you redraw by hand. Add custom styles trained on your own references — the mechanism that actually keeps forty assets looking like one brand — and you have a tool built around the part of design that comes after the pretty picture.

The limits are real. On photorealism Recraft trails Midjourney and FLUX, and it is not close on the hardest scenes; if you want a cinematic still, generate it somewhere else. Complex vector prompts can also return SVGs that are technically editable but structurally untidy, with more paths than a human would have drawn. And the free plan is a trap for the unwary: 50 credits a day sounds generous until you read that those images are owned by Recraft, published in the community gallery, and unlicensed for commercial use. Anything you intend to ship needs at least the $10 Basic plan, where credits also stop rolling over month to month.

Priced against the field it holds up well. Basic at $10/month — $8 billed annually — buys 1,000 credits with full commercial rights, which undercuts Midjourney's entry tier while adding vectors, brand styles, upscaling and an API. Canva's generators are more convenient if you never leave Canva; Adobe Firefly is the safer choice if indemnified commercial-safe training data is a procurement requirement.

Verdict: the best AI image tool for design work that has to be edited, versioned and kept on brand. Buy it for logos, icons and illustration systems; keep Midjourney or FLUX around for the photoreal hero shots it will not win.

What reviewers elsewhere say

84% positive Designers rate the vector output and brand-style consistency well above general image models; the recurring complaints are the credit economy and a free tier that owns your images.

Key features

  • Native vector generation — output opens as editable SVG paths in Illustrator, Figma, Sketch or Inkscape
  • Custom styles trained on your own reference images, so a whole asset set stays on brand
  • Icon sets, mockups, and infinite-canvas editing alongside single-image generation
  • Raster tools: creative upscale, background removal, inpainting and prompt extraction
  • Public API billed per credit, with the same models the web app uses
  • Video generation on the Pro plan and up

How to use Recraft

  1. Sign up free and spend the daily 50 credits testing prompts — but do not use those images commercially.
  2. Switch the output type to vector when you need an SVG rather than a raster image.
  3. Upload reference images to train a custom style, then generate the whole asset set against it.
  4. Export the SVG and finish it in Illustrator or Figma — the paths are editable geometry.
  5. Move to Basic ($10/month, or $8/month billed annually) before you ship anything: paid plans grant commercial rights.
  6. Developers: use the API for batch generation, billed against the same credit pool.

Frequently asked questions

What is Recraft?

Recraft is an AI design tool that generates both raster images and true vector SVGs from prompts, with custom brand styles, icon sets, mockups and an editing canvas. It is aimed at designers and brand owners rather than at general-purpose image art, and it reported over 7 million registered users in mid-2025.

How much does Recraft cost?

The free plan gives 50 credits a day but publishes your images and grants no commercial licence. Paid plans are Basic $10/month for 1,000 credits, Advanced $27/month for 4,000, Pro $48/month for 8,400 and Teams $55/seat/month for 9,000 per seat. Annual billing saves 20%, and extra credits cost $2 per 200.

Can I use Recraft images commercially?

Only on a paid plan. Images generated on the free plan are owned by Recraft, appear publicly in the community gallery, and are not licensed for commercial use. Paid subscribers get full ownership and commercial rights for everything generated while subscribed.

Does Recraft have an API?

Yes. The API bills per credit against the same pool as the web app, with pricing that varies by operation and output type, and it exposes the same vector and raster models.

Recraft vs Midjourney — which should a designer buy?

Midjourney still wins on raw aesthetic quality for photoreal and illustrative stills. Recraft wins whenever the output has to be edited or reused: it produces real SVG paths, holds a brand style across a whole set, and costs less at the entry tier. Many designers run both — Midjourney for hero imagery, Recraft for logos, icons and anything headed into Illustrator.
