About Character.AI
Character.AI is the biggest platform for chatting with user-created AI personas — fictional characters, companions, tutors, and original creations, with voice calls, group scenes, and image and video generation layered on top. It's free with ads and capped regenerations; c.ai+ at $9.99/mo (about $7.92/mo billed annually) removes ads and adds faster, priority responses with enhanced memory. Since November 2025 the platform is adults-only for open-ended chat, with age verification enforced.

Best for
Pros
- Unmatched character library — the network effect no rival companion app matches
- Free tier still includes unlimited-length conversations with any character
- c.ai+ is cheap for what it gates: $9.99/mo, or ~$7.92/mo billed annually
- Character creation is genuinely easy — a persona, greeting, and example dialogue is enough
Cons
- Free tier has degraded: full-screen ads mid-chat, capped swipe regenerations, slower peak-hour responses
- Mandatory age verification (including face-scan options) since the under-18 ban — a privacy trade-off many users resent
- Heavy content filter frustrates roleplayers; model swaps in 2026 (PipSqueak 2, DeepSqueak) drew community backlash
- Trustpilot sentiment is brutal — safety changes and model churn tanked public reviews
Our verdict
Best for: Adults who want immersive character roleplay, companion chat, or collaborative fiction with the deepest character catalog available.
Skip if: You're under 18 (open-ended chat is banned), want an assistant for real work, or expect an unfiltered roleplay experience — rivals like Janitor AI cater to that crowd.
Our review
Editorial score: 3.8 out of 5Character.AI still owns the category it invented. The moat isn't the model — it's the catalog: millions of community-built characters, from anime leads to study buddies, plus voice calls, group scenes, and a creator community no rival approaches. The purpose-built roleplay models genuinely stay in character better than a general chatbot with a persona prompt, and the free tier — for all its new friction — still lets you talk to anything in the library for as long as you want. At $9.99/mo (or ~$7.92 annually), c.ai+ is priced like an impulse buy rather than a SaaS tool.
But this is a product in the middle of a painful transformation. The 2025 teen-suicide lawsuits pushed Character.AI into the strictest safety regime in consumer AI: under-18 open-ended chat is gone, age verification (including face-scan options) is mandatory, and the content filter clamps down hard on romantic and edgy roleplay. Simultaneously the company retired beloved chat models for the newer PipSqueak 2 and DeepSqueak and rolled ads across the free tier. The community's fury is visible in a ~2.6 Trustpilot score and a cratered app-store rating — some of it grief over a product that changed, some of it legitimate complaints about paying users hitting the same filter walls.
Whether it fits you depends entirely on which side of the trade you're on. As a supervised, adults-only creative playground it is more defensible than ever, and parents get real controls. As the freewheeling roleplay paradise of 2023, it no longer exists — that audience has scattered to Janitor AI, Chai, and self-hosted frontends, and no amount of new features (AvatarFX video, Imagine Gallery, community feeds) wins them back.
Verdict: still the best place for character chat if you're an adult who can live within the filter — the catalog and polish are unmatched. Skip it if unrestricted roleplay is the point; the platform has chosen safety over that market and isn't turning back.
What reviewers elsewhere say
40% positive — Long-time users love the immersion and character variety but review scores cratered in 2025-26 over the content filter, ad rollout, forced age verification, and retiring beloved chat models.
