Qwen is easy to underrate from the West, because the app itself is unremarkable — a competent chat interface with no subscription attached. What makes it worth a review is what sits underneath: an open-weight model family that has become one of the default choices for anyone running AI locally. Using the hosted app is one way in; downloading the same models into Ollama is another, and very few assistants give you that choice at all.

On capability it is genuinely strong, particularly on code and on languages that the American labs treat as an afterthought. If you work in Thai, Indonesian, Arabic or any of the dozens of languages where ChatGPT is merely adequate, Qwen is frequently better, and it costs nothing. As a free second opinion on a hard answer it is also more useful than most, because it is not a smaller sibling of a paid model — you are getting the real thing.

The reservations are structural rather than technical. Data goes to Alibaba Cloud under Singapore terms, which rules it out for a lot of client work regardless of how good the output is.
