Wix's AI story is broader than the 'describe your site' demo. The conversational builder (which replaced the old ADI in 2024) genuinely produces a complete starter site — sections, copy, images, meta tags — and then 15+ AI tools keep working after launch: blog posts, product descriptions, ad copy, email campaigns, and Astro, an assistant that operates dashboard settings so you don't hunt through menus. No competitor bundles this much AI with this much business infrastructure.

The trade-offs are the classic Wix ones, unchanged by AI. Untouched AI output looks like a competent template, not a brand; renewal pricing creeps above the first-year rates; and your site can never leave — there's no export path, so switching platforms means rebuilding. The review record is consistent with a 260M-user consumer product: solid 4.2/4.4 on G2 and Capterra, a 4-star Trustpilot profile across 28,000+ reviews where support earns praise and billing earns complaints.

Against the field: Framer produces prettier sites for design-led brands, Shopify is stronger for serious e-commerce, and Squarespace still edges the template aesthetics. But none of them matches the breadth of what one Wix subscription stands up, and at $17/month billed annually the Light plan is the cheapest credible entry among the majors.

Verdict: the best default for a small business that wants AI to do the heavy lifting and one bill to cover everything. Designers and high-volume merchants should look at Framer and Shopify respectively.
